Well, the media industry was settling into a new rhythm. Then the economic downturn set in and has echoed the challenges facing media companies in the spring of 2020. A silver lining for media companies, however, is their experience weathering the pandemic and the work they have done in the intervening years to reinforce their businesses: streamlining their operations and building up their first-party databases, developing newer revenue sources like commerce and NFTs and rethinking their editorial products — from newsletters to dynamic paywalls — to attract audiences as well as to convert and retain subscribers.

Join us at the Digiday Publishing Summit to hear how media companies are building and adapting their business models to address and overcome the current economic climate. Walk away from this event with a better understanding of how other media organizations are building a more sustainable future.

Please note: We’re no longer requiring proof of vaccination prior to the event. We encourage masks to be worn indoors, distancing when possible and for attendees to stay home if they have a fever, are feeling sick or are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. Streamlining Operations and Building Up First-Party Databases

As advertisers are grappling with the loss of third-party cookies and privacy regulations across the globe, publishers have been building out and investing in first-party data offerings in response. They’re finding opportunities to monetize data from owned properties through partnerships, as well as to power their own marketing efforts and provide more value to advertisers. In this session, hear one publisher share their strategy and investments in their first- party data interface.

3:00 p.m.
Dynamic Paywalls Are, Well, Dynamic

In 2020, many publishers with paywalls lowered the restrictions on content around big news events like the pandemic and the presidential election to provide a public service. Two years later, publishers’ paywalls are changing again. Media companies are using their paywalls to not only grow their subscription base, but reinforce their advertising businesses in preparation for a cookie-less future. Since the death of the third party cookie is a mere few months out, publishers’ paywalls are expected to change dramatically in the meantime. In this session, hear from one executive on how media companies can prescriptively approach paywalls to achieve business goals.
