Well, the media industry was settling into a new rhythm. Then the economic downturn set in and has echoed the challenges facing media companies in the spring of 2020. A silver lining for media companies, however, is their experience weathering the pandemic and the work they have done in the intervening years to reinforce their businesses: streamlining their operations and building up their first-party databases, developing newer revenue sources like commerce and NFTs and rethinking their editorial products — from newsletters to dynamic paywalls — to attract audiences as well as to convert and retain subscribers.

Join us at the Digiday Publishing Summit to hear how media companies are building and adapting their business models to address and overcome the current economic climate. Walk away from this event with a better understanding of how other media organizations are building a more sustainable future.

Please note: We’re no longer requiring proof of vaccination prior to the event. We encourage masks to be worn indoors, distancing when possible and for attendees to stay home if they have a fever, are feeling sick or are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. You can find more about our Covid protocols here.

How Publishers Are Maximizing Portfolio Approaches to Addressability
Ritz Carlton Ballroom 1 & 2

With third-party cookies now set to expire in 2024, and privacy regulations evolving globally, digital buyers and sellers are testing alternative approaches to safe, data-driven advertising for the future. Publishers specifically are seeking solutions that protect against data leakage, monetize their inventory, and ultimately deliver value to advertisers while maintaining control over their content and trusted consumer relationships. In this session, Sam Marc, Senior Director, Addressable Solutions at PubMatic, and Mark Murrin, SVP, Business Development at My Code Media, will discuss the importance of sell-side data activation in order to reach consumers with relevant, privacy-safe advertising in today’s fragmented marketplace, expanding on portfolio approaches to addressability and how they can drive revenue for publishers and high-performing campaigns for advertisers. They will also discuss Google’s extended cookie timeline and the value of leveraging cookie-less solutions, even in the short term.

Beyond social, art of the possible with vertical video
Ritz Carlton Ballroom 1 & 2

Mobile devices account for nearly half of web traffic, and 80% of social platform users. This has generated a seismic shift in consumer behavior where 94% of smartphone users hold their devices vertically, almost exclusively. Ever since the mass adoption of vertical video and live streaming we have seen influencers transform into brands, brands transform into media companies, and media companies evolve into retailers.

In the past 5 years alone, the use of vertical video format by brands, creators, and publishers have evolved into use cases including branded content, shoppable video, live streams, swipeable stories, and interactive experiences from polls to augmented reality. To date most of these features were landlocked inside a walled garden.

As Web3 gains traction and more publishers and brands research what decentralization means to them, new technologies like Firework are entering the marketplace, enabling publishers to modernize and monetize in new ways using vertical video on site and within mobile apps. As a result of evolving consumer behavior outside of the walled garden, nearly $1B in commerce is transacted in Livestreams every day, 73% of marketers are planning to use Livestream video, and 80% of consumers purchase based on an influencer or publisher.

In this session, we are going to uncover how publishers will be able to latch on to growing global trends related to utilizing vertical video for diversifying their revenue streams, enabling vertical demand, supplying brands with solutions that matter most, and improving user experience.
